As the 2015 NBA Draft reached the latter part of the first round, Guillermo “Willy” Hernangomez knew his dream of playing in the NBA was going to happen soon. Willy, surrounded by family and friends, remained at home in his native Spain to watch the draft. Nearing 5:00am in Madrid the NBA’s Deputy Commissioner, Mark Tatum, walked to the stage. Tatum announced, “With the 35th pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select, Guillermo Hernangomez…” Excitement poured through the Hernangomez family as Willy’s dream had come true. However, quickly after the excitement of being drafted, Willy received some important news. The New York Knicks were avidly trying to acquire Willy throughout draft night and were finally able to do so shortly after the 76ers selected him. Giving up two future draft picks and cash considerations, the Knicks were able to get their man from Philadelphia. Once draft night was said and done, Willy would be joining his former teammate from Sevilla and fellow ASM client, Kristaps Porzingis, as a member of the New York Knicks.
