ASM’s young pros prove their mettle
ASM’s young US-based rookies have been making their presence known in the last weeks. Nerlens Noel, Markel Brown, Tyler Johnson, Peyton Siva, Stephen Holt, Chaz Williams and Erik Murphy all had very productive games for their respective teams.
Nerlens Noel had a big night for the Philadelphia 76ers in a 106-95 loss to the Indiana Pacers. The former Kentucky Wildcat feel just shy of a triple double with 12 points, 9 rebounds and a career-high 9 blocks – not to mention 4 steals. The 76ers’ record for blocks in a game was set by Darryl Dawkins in 1983 with 13. Coming off an appearance in the NBA Rising Challenge over All-Star weekend, it would be no surprise if Noel threatens this record during his time in Philadelphia. Noel is averaging 8.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.6 steals per game on the season.
Markel Brown made the most of his first start T, showcasing his athleticism with a double-double in a 110-82 win over the Denver Nuggets. The second-round draft choice, 44th overall, who once got ejected from a college game for dunking, played 45 minutes – 19 more than his previous high – in the Mile High City. Markel finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds, four blocked shots, two steals, one assist and a ridiculous alley-oop throw-down off a pass from Deron Williams with four minutes left in the third quarter.
Tyler Johnson, who recently signed through the remainder of the season with the Miami Heat, has been extremely productive when his number is called. We highlight 3 of Johnson’s recent games; (1) Johnson posted 13 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks in 27 minutes in a win over the Boston Celtics, (2) Johnson then posted 18 points and 25 minutes against the San Antonio Spurs, (3) Finally, Johnson posted 14 points and 4 rebounds in 23 minutes in the win over the New York Knicks.
Erik Murphy had a career-high 31 points & career high 19 rebounds against the Santa Cruz Warriors last night. He was dominant from beyond the 3 point line, making 4-of-8. The 30/20 outburst came on the heels of another strong performance the night before. Erik put up 21 points & grabbed 8 rebounds in a 149-142 victory on February 24th.
Peyton Siva has been another young talent in the NBA D-League that has been productive with Erie Bayhawks. Siva posted 20 points 9 assists and 3 steals in 33 minutes last week. This performance led the Bayhawks past the Westchester Knicks. He followed up that game with 14 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals in 31 minutes against the Canton Charge the next night. We are excited what this young floor general will bring to the NBA in the coming years.
Stephen Holt had a very good week with the Canton Charge. His recent games prove that he is a leader in the NBA D-league. Holt posted 24 points and 4 rebounds in 30 minutes against the Grand Rapid Drive, a victory for Canton. Earlier in the week Holt also had a great game against the Delaware 87er’s where he had 15 points, 4 steals, 6 rebounds, and 8 assist.
Chaz Williams is the newest member of the Maine Red Claws. He has proven to be a winning ingredient so far, leading Maine to 2 victories in his only 2 appearances. In his first appearance Williams had 9 assists & 3 rebounds in a short stint. The next game, he was able to show his offensive talents a little more, scoring 10 points & adding 5 assists in his second appearance for the club.
